An senior official of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that President Bola Tinubu faces no credible challenger for the 2027 presidential election, positioning the incumbent’s re-election as virtually assured.
Joe Igbokwe, a prominent APC chieftain in Lagos State, made the comments in a social media post. He argued that the opposition lacks both the compelling alternative platform and the organizational strength necessary to defeat Tinubu. “Without sounding immodest I can tell you that PBAT has no rival,” Igbokwe wrote, using the common acronym for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “There is no magic that will make people stand with you if you do not have anything to bring to the table.” He added that Tinubu’s current governance would yield the political reward of a second term.
Igbokwe framed any prospect of unseating Tinubu as mere speculation, emphasizing the president’s long-term political preparation. He noted that Tinubu’s path to the presidency spanned over two decades, culminating in his successful 2023 campaign. “He marked his times for more than 20 years waiting for the right time to throw his hat into the ring. It came in 2023,” the statement read. “He is now PBAT and he is reworking Nigeria. Now, in your wildest imaginations you think you will unseat him.”
The comments highlight the APC’s confidence as Nigeria looks toward the next electoral cycle. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and a key kingmaker in Nigerian politics, secured the presidency after a competitive primary and a closely contested general election. His administration is currently implementing economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and currency unification, which have been accompanied by significant inflation and public hardship.
Igbokwe’s assertion underscores the governing party’s narrative of an inevitable Tinubu second term, while dismissing the fragmented opposition’s capacity to mount a unified challenge.
