Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has urged voters to once again turn out in massive numbers for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates in the State House of Assembly election scheduled for Saturday, March 11. He made the appeal after a three‑day consultative meeting with the party’s candidates, caucus leaders, stakeholders and non‑indigene leaders from the state’s eight local government areas, held at Government House in Yenagoa.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, on Monday, Governor Diri congratulated the PDP state chapter on the overwhelming victory the party recorded in the February 25 general election. He praised the peaceful conduct of those elections, describing it as unprecedented in Bayelsa’s history, and attributed the success to divine providence. “I like to return all thanks and glory to God for the victory recorded in the February 25 elections. It can only be God,” he said, adding that the party’s achievement—100 percent victory in the state—was a “no‑mean feat” compared with other states.
The governor expressed confidence that the same outcome could be replicated in the upcoming House of Assembly election. “In this Saturday’s House of Assembly election, I urge people of the state to replicate this feat in giving victory to our candidates in the 24 state constituencies. I can assure you that our party will not deviate from its track record of development,” he declared.
The PDP’s recent performance in Bayelsa has been strong. In the presidential and National Assembly polls, PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar won the state with 68,818 votes, and the party secured all three senatorial seats—Bayelsa Central, East, and West. In the House of Representatives elections, the PDP captured four of the five federal constituencies: Brass/Nembe, Sagbama/Ekeremor, Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma, and Ogbia. The Southern Ijaw federal constituency seat remains pending a supplementary election.
