Low Voter Turnout in Kano By-Elections Despite Early INEC

Low Turnout Marks Kano State By-Election Despite Early Preparations

Kano, Nigeria – By-elections held across Kano State on Saturday recorded significantly low voter turnout at numerous polling units within the Kano Municipal Local Government Area, even as electoral and security officials were deployed early.

By mid-morning, a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed that many polling stations were sparsely populated, with only a few voters waiting to cast their ballots. Officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present at most locations, having arrived promptly. Electoral materials were neatly arranged, and ad-hoc staff were seated at their desks, awaiting a projected increase in voter flow as the day progressed.

The visibly low participation contrasted with the robust security posture maintained throughout the exercise. Security personnel, including police and other agencies, were stationed at strategic points around polling centres. Officers were visibly armed, a measure officials said was to ensure a safe environment for both voters and electoral workers.

Several voters who did turn out described the process as orderly. Audu Musa, who voted at the Kankarofi polling unit, confirmed the process was “smooth and peaceful” but echoed the sentiment of many by lamenting the poor turnout. Community observer Abdullahi Isa also expressed surprise at the low attendance but praised the security agencies for their professional conduct.

Despite the quiet morning, INEC officials and stakeholders remained optimistic. They suggested that turnout could improve in the afternoon, a common pattern in Nigerian elections. The focus, they reiterated, was on ensuring the exercise concluded peacefully, transparently, and with credibility.

The by-election, held to fill a vacant state assembly seat, is being closely watched as a test of electoral preparedness in one of Nigeria’s most populous and politically significant states. The final turnout figures and the declaration of results will be key indicators of public engagement in the nascent democratic process beyond the 2023 general elections.
