APC Wins Ungogo, Kano Municipal Assembly By-elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured victories in two separate State House of Assembly by-elections held in Kano State on Saturday, retaining its hold over the Ungogo and Kano Municipal constituencies.

In the Kano Municipal Constituency contest, APC candidate Aliyu Daneji was declared the winner after polling 7,484 votes. The result was announced by the constituency’s Returning Officer, Prof. Ibrahim Siraj, who officially returned Daneji as the duly elected member.

Similarly, in the Ungogo Constituency by-election, the APC’s Aminu Sa’ad clinched the seat with a total of 8,975 votes. Prof. Ali Abdullahi, the Returning Officer for that constituency, formally declared Sa’ad elected.

The conduct of the polls was overseen by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Amb. Abdu Zango, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Kano State, provided initial commentary on the voter turnout, describing it as low. He attributed this to a combination of factors, notably the timing of the election and what he characterized as limited participation from some political parties.

These by-elections were necessitated by the unfortunate and sudden deaths of the former elected members representing both constituencies, which created the legislative vacancies. The successful conclusion of these polls restores full representation for the two areas in the Kano State House of Assembly.

The dual victories reinforce the APC’s current dominance in the state’s legislative arm, ensuring the party maintains its numerical strength ahead of future assembly proceedings. The results also underscore the party’s ability to retain seats even in by-elections triggered by unexpected circumstances. INEC is expected to issue official certificates of return to the winners in the coming days, formalizing their return to the legislature.
