With barely 83 days left in his regime, President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) will be conferred with the Democracy Icon Award by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The announcement was made by ECOWAS Chairman and President of Guinea‑Bissau, Umaro Embalo, during a bilateral meeting with Buhari on the sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries in Doha, Qatar.

The award recognises Buhari’s achievements in defending and promoting democracy throughout the sub‑region. Embalo asserted that the Nigerian leader has done more than any other to support democratic governments in West Africa and to combat the emergence of non‑democratic regimes. “For this,” the ECOWAS Chairman said, “President Buhari will have his name on the Roll of Honor in the community’s new headquarters building upon its completion in Abuja, so that future generations of West African citizens will know about the greatness he achieved and copy his laudable example.”

A statement signed on Tuesday by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, read: “Buhari will have his name on the roll of honor in the community’s new headquarters building upon its completion in Abuja.” The statement, titled “ECOWAS to confer democracy icon award on President Buhari,” also highlighted that the honor will be displayed in the new ECOWAS headquarters.

In response, President Buhari welcomed the proposition, stressing that democracy is a dependable vehicle for achieving national development because it unites diverse peoples and cultures.
