The Lagos State chapter of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has suspended its industrial action, ending a period of disrupted healthcare services in the state. The decision, announced over the weekend, follows direct intervention by the Lagos State House of Assembly and extensive consultations with national labour bodies.
In a statement signed by its State Secretary, Kabiawu Gbolahan, JOHESU confirmed the suspension after “wide consultations with all relevant stakeholders and professional bodies.” The union specifically cited the “timely and decisive intervention” of the state legislature, alongside engagements with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), as pivotal to the resolution.
A key condition for the suspension was the receipt of firm commitments from the government that all issues raised by the union would receive favourable consideration. JOHESU emphasised that its members must not face any victimisation for participating in the strike, stating this assurance was explicitly provided by the Lagos State House of Assembly. The union has directed its members to resume duties immediately across all health facilities.
The Lagos State Government confirmed an agreement had been reached, describing a high-level meeting as “frank and constructive.” In its statement, the government reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the union’s demands within regulatory frameworks and provided clear timelines for resolving outstanding concerns. Both parties agreed to sustain dialogue and maintain open communication channels to ensure full implementation of the resolutions.
The government also acknowledged the critical role of allied health professionals, reiterating its pledge for improved working conditions and equitable treatment. It thanked residents for their patience and assured the public of a return to uninterrupted, quality healthcare services. The prompt resumption of duties by healthcare workers is expected as consultations continue to translate the agreements into lasting outcomes for the sector.
