Adamawa Assembly PDP Members Quit Amid APC Speculation

Six members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Adamawa State House of Assembly have resigned from the party, bringing the total number of lawmakers who have left the fold in the last two days to seven.

The latest departures, announced on Wednesday, follow the resignation of Deputy Speaker Mohammed Buba Jidjiwa (Jada/Mbulo Constituency) on Monday. Those who submitted their resignation letters on Monday also included Kefas Kalvin (Toungo Constituency) and Bulus Geoffrey (Leko/Koma Constituency).

The three additional members who resigned on Wednesday are Haruna Jilantikiri (Madagali Constituency), Kefas Emmanuel (Song Constituency), and Ahmed Jingi Bele (Maiha Constituency). All seven legislators now serve as independents, having formally severed ties with the PDP.

The wave of defections occurs amid persistent political speculation regarding the future alignment of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri. Observers note a growing belief that the governor, who won the 2023 election on the PDP platform, is preparing to defect to the opposition All Progressives Congress ( APC). No member of the House of Assembly has publicly stated an intention to join a specific party following their resignation. However, political analysts and party insiders in the state consider it highly probable that the former PDP lawmakers, like the governor, are aligning with the APC.

These departures represent a significant blow to the PDP’s legislative strength in Adamawa, potentially altering the dynamics within the 25-member Assembly. The loss of the Deputy Speaker and six other members weakens the party’s formal voting bloc and could impact the passage of executive bills. The resignations also intensify focus on Governor Fintiri’s political strategy, with many viewing the Assembly defections as a preparatory step for his anticipated party switch. The development underscores the fluidity of Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election cycle, where realignments often begin well in advance. All eyes are now on formal announcements from the governor and the exodus of legislators, which would officially reshape the state’s political equation.
