Kenya Arrests Trafficker for Russia Job, Ukraine Fight Scam

Kenyan authorities have arrested a key suspect in a trafficking network that recruited over 1,000 nationals to fight for Russia in Ukraine, often under false promises of skilled employment. Festus Omwamba was apprehended in Moyale and charged in Nairobi with trafficking 25 Kenyans last year. Police state he attempted to flee the country after a recent return from Russia.

The case exposes a systematic operation targeting Kenyan job seekers. According to an intelligence report presented to Parliament, rogue recruitment agencies collaborated with Kenyan and Russian officials to lure recruits. Omwamba, identified by survivors who spoke with The Associated Press, managed visa applications and travel for many. Victims described being told they would secure jobs like plumbing, only to have their passports confiscated upon arrival and be transferred directly to military training camps before deployment to the front lines.

The human cost is significant. The Kenyan government reports that at least 89 recruited nationals remain active on the battlefield, dozens are hospitalized, 28 are missing, and one has been confirmed dead. The crisis came to light after families raised alarms about relatives who vanished after traveling for work. Some survivors, like John Kamau, escaped and sought refuge at Kenya’s embassy in Moscow.

The Russian Embassy has denied issuing combat visas to foreigners, asserting that any enlistment is voluntary. This contradicts the accounts of Kenyan recruits who describe coercion and deception. Omwamba’s arrest represents a critical development in Kenya’s efforts to dismantle this recruitment pipeline and protect its citizens from exploitation amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Authorities indicate the investigation continues, with potential implications for wider criminal networks involved in the transnational trafficking of foreign fighters.
