Opposition leaders address 2026 Electoral Act amendment

Opposition Leaders to Address Nigerian Electoral Law Amendments Amidst Controversy

Leaders from Nigeria’s main opposition political parties will convene a joint news conference in Abuja on Thursday to discuss the recently passed Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill and its implications for the nation’s democratic process. The event, themed “Urgent call to save Nigeria’s democracy,” is scheduled to begin at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

Among those already seated for the briefing are prominent national figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Also in attendance are former Ministers Rauf Aregbesola and Rotimi Ameachi, former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, and Senator David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Further participants include Dr. Ahmed Ajuji, National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), former Senator Dino Melaye, and Yunusa Tanko.

The conference follows the National Assembly’s passage of the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill on February 17. The legislation, which was harmonized by both chambers and subsequently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on February 18, introduces several changes to Nigeria’s electoral framework.

A central point of national debate has been the amendment’s provision for the electronic transmission of election results in real time. This contentious clause, specifically within Section 60(3) of the harmonized report, has drawn significant public and political scrutiny.

The opposition’s decision to hold a unified press conference signals coordinated concern over the amended law. Analysts suggest the gathering aims to present a collective narrative on perceived deficiencies in the bill and mobilize public discourse ahead of future electoral cycles.

This high-profile intervention by opposition heavyweights underscores the deep political contestation surrounding Nigeria’s electoral reforms. The news conference is expected to detail specific objections to the amendment and potentially outline alternative proposals, setting the stage for continued debate on the integrity and modernization of the country’s voting system.
