LASTMA Digital Tech Boosts Emergency, Cuts Crashes, Gridlock

The Lagos State Government has implemented a suite of advanced digital technologies to transform emergency response, reduce road crashes, and alleviate chronic traffic congestion, marking a significant shift toward a data-driven traffic management system.

According to Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the strategic deployment of modern tools has fundamentally improved how the agency responds to incidents. Speaking after a weekend operational review, he stated that these technologies enable faster officer dispatch and enhanced life-saving capabilities across the state’s roads.

The integrated system includes surveillance drones, Traffic Management System (TMS) cameras, GPS-enabled patrol vehicles, body cameras, and a central command-and-control centre. A toll-free hotline and automated incident-detection platforms allow traffic incidents to be identified instantly, verified via digital feeds, and relayed to the nearest rescue team. This replaces previous systems often hampered by delayed reports and logistical delays.

“Our commitment to technological modernization is anchored on the imperative to safeguard human life. Every minute saved in emergency response is invaluable,” Bakare-Oki said. He noted that real-time coordination through mobile data terminals and integrated communications used by field operatives and zonal heads now facilitates quicker traffic diversion, faster collaboration with medical and security agencies, and more rapid clearance of accident scenes. This reduces the risk of secondary crashes and prolonged gridlock.

Furthermore, predictive data analytics are employed to study traffic patterns, identify accident-prone zones, and pinpoint congestion points. This allows LASTMA to pre-deploy officers during peak periods to prevent incidents from escalating.

Bakare-Oki framed the investment as core to the state’s vision of building a smart, resilient, and globally competitive city. Beyond operational speed, the digital infrastructure has improved record-keeping, enforcement transparency, and data-driven planning, with detailed incident logs stored for future analysis.

He reaffirmed that saving lives and managing traffic efficiently remain LASTMA’s top priorities, emphasizing that effective emergency action also strengthens public trust in government institutions. “As we consolidate these achievements, our resolve remains unwavering. We shall continue to invest in technological innovation, capacity development and inter-agency collaboration,” he added.

The authority has urged motorists and residents to cooperate with officers, obey traffic regulations, and support these modernization efforts aimed at protecting lives and improving flow across Lagos. The initiative represents a major step in addressing the traffic and safety challenges of one of Africa’s largest megacities through systematic technological integration.
