The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and national peace, as global geopolitical tensions in the Middle East raise concerns about potential spillover effects.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ag. IGP Disu emphasized that Nigeria’s internal security situation remains stable and firmly under control. However, he announced that the Force has proactively reinforced intelligence-led policing operations nationwide to pre-empt any threats.
The directive, communicated through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, orders all Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to intensify security measures. Particular focus is directed at the North West, North East, and North Central geopolitical zones—regions with historical security challenges. CPs are instructed to enhance surveillance and intelligence gathering, strengthen partnerships with traditional and religious leaders, increase police visibility around worshipping centres and public spaces, and act decisively against any attempts to incite unrest or sectarian tension by exploiting international events.
“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that Nigeria will not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts,” the statement declared. “Any attempt to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country will be met with the full weight of the law.”
The IGP appealed to community leaders to promote peace and urged all citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, advising them to report suspicious activities promptly to the nearest police station.
This heightened posture underscores the NPF’s strategic shift towards anticipatory policing in response to complex global dynamics. The Force asserts its preparedness to maintain national security, calling for public cooperation to ensure social cohesion and prevent the externalization of conflicts onto Nigerian soil. The statement concludes that the Police remain resolute in their duty to protect every citizen and preserve the nation’s peace at all times.
