El-Rufai Wiretap Confession Makes ICPC Find Expected: APC

Alleged Wiretapping Equipment Found at Ex-Governor’s Residence Sparks Political Debate

A senior figure in Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has cited a past televised admission to defend the credibility of allegations that wiretapping equipment was discovered at the Abuja home of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) was reported to have recovered suspected surveillance equipment capable of intercepting private conversations and accessing sensitive security documents during a search of El-Rufai’s residence. However, the former governor’s family has strongly denied the report, issuing a statement that categorically stated no such equipment was found.

In response, APC chieftain Ayekooto Akindele argued on the social media platform X that the denial was irrelevant. He stated that El-Rufai had already publicly confessed to such activities, making the current allegation unsurprising.

“There’s no point for anyone saying that no wiretapping equipment was found in El-Rufai’s house. No point whatsoever,” Akindele wrote. He referenced a specific interview, adding, “Distinguished Mallam El-Rufai himself had openly confessed on Arise TV Live Interview that ‘We listen to the calls of NSA’.”

The development places the ICPC’s alleged discovery at the center of a political firestorm. El-Rufai, a prominent and influential figure within the APC who served as governor until 2023, has not yet issued a direct personal response to the latest allegation. The ICPC has also not officially confirmed or commented on the reports of the seizure.

The core of the dispute hinges on the veracity of the initial report and the interpretation of El-Rufai’s past statement about监听 national security advisor communications. Legal experts note that the alleged possession of wiretapping equipment without authorization is a serious offense under Nigerian law. The situation underscores the ongoing tension between the administration’s anti-corruption agencies and high-profile opposition figures.

The ICPC’s mandate includes investigating corrupt practices and related offences. The outcome of this specific allegation, and whether it leads to a formal investigation or charges, remains a significant point of national interest, reflecting broader debates over accountability and political rivalry in Nigeria. The former governor’s office has yet to provide further comment beyond the family’s denial.
