Zamfara Defection to APC Secures Tinubu’s Northwest for 2027

The defection of Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal to Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has significantly consolidated the party’s national influence, a senior party figure said on Tuesday, positioning President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 general election.

Amina Suzuki, chairperson of the APC’s Franchise Chapter, stated that Lawal’s move from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday underscores growing confidence in Tinubu’s administration across the critical Northwest geopolitical zone. “The Northwest remains one of the most influential voting blocs in Nigeria’s democratic process,” Suzuki said in a statement. “With this significant political realignment in Zamfara, it is increasingly evident that President Tinubu’s leadership and policies are gaining widespread acceptance across the region.”

Lawal’s defection reduces the PDP’s gubernatorial strength to just two states—Bauchi and Oyo—while boosting the APC’s governorship count to 34 out of Nigeria’s 36 states. This realignment follows a trend of political elites joining the ruling party since Tinubu’s 2023 election.

Analysts note that control of state governments is crucial for national electoral mobilization, fundraising, and implementation of federal policies. The Northwest, comprising states like Sokoto, Katsina, and Kaduna, is a major population center and a traditional battleground in presidential politics. Suzuki’s comments frame Lawal’s switch as part of a broader national consolidation behind Tinubu’s reform agenda.

The development strengthens the APC’s structural advantage ahead of the next electoral cycle. However, political alliances in Nigeria remain fluid, and the opposition PDP retains pockets of influence, particularly in the northern and southern regions. The 2027 election cycle will test whether the current alignment persists or further shifts occur as policy impacts and local dynamics evolve.

For now, the defection highlights the APC’s efforts to present a united national front, with party officials emphasizing perceived grassroots support for Tinubu’s economic reforms and security initiatives.
