Richard Hugh Montgomery has been appointed as the new British High Commissioner to Nigeria, a decision announced by the United Kingdom government on Tuesday. He is slated to assume the post in April 2023, succeeding Catriona Laing, who has served as the UK’s representative in Nigeria since 2018 and will be transferred to another diplomatic appointment.

The High Commissioner acts as the UK government’s representative in a Commonwealth nation, overseeing the consulate’s work in political relations, trade and investment, press and cultural affairs, as well as visa and consular services.

Montgomery’s diplomatic career includes serving as counsellor (development) and Head of Office for the Department for International Development in Abuja from 2009 to 2013. He most recently held the position of UK Executive Director for the World Bank Group in Washington. His experience also encompasses executive development roles in Zambia, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.

He holds a PhD in social anthropology from the University of Cambridge, together with additional research qualifications from GKW Consult Mannheim and the University of Manchester.
