UEFA Disciplinary Case Against Pedro Neto for Ball Boy Push

UEFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea winger Pedro Neto following his interaction with a ball boy during the Champions League Round of 16 first-leg match against Paris Saint-Germain.

The incident occurred while the match was in progress at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. With PSG holding a 4-2 lead, Neto attempted to expedite a throw-in by pushing a ball boy who, in the player’s assessment, was slow to return the match ball. The Portugal international immediately gestured in apology after the contact. The match referee took no disciplinary action during the game.

Despite the absence of an in-game sanction, the European football governing body has moved to review the episode. An official UEFA statement confirmed: “Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Chelsea player Pedro Lomba Neto for unsportsmanlike conduct.” The body’s control, ethics and disciplinary body will assess the case.

The potential ramifications are significant for the Portuguese winger and his club. A suspension resulting from the proceedings could see Neto ruled out of the crucial second leg at Stamford Bridge next week. Chelsea, trailing from the first fixture, will require all available attacking options for the return match as they seek to overturn the deficit and advance to the quarter-finals.

The case underscores UEFA’s authority to review incidents post-match, independent of the on-field officials’ decisions. The governing body’s focus on “unsportsmanlike conduct” relates to conduct deemed contrary to the spirit of the game, including interactions with match officials, opponents, or officials such as ball boys. A ruling against Neto would set a precedent regarding player conduct towards support staff in high-profile European fixtures.

The outcome of the disciplinary hearing will be determined separately and is expected ahead of the return leg. Chelsea’s preparation for the decisive fixture now includes uncertainty over the availability of one of their primary wide attacking threats. The development adds an off-field subplot to a tie already pivotal for both clubs’ Champions League ambitions.
