Oba Akintunde Urges Unity Against Mockery in Ogun 2027 Race

The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, has urged politicians in Ogun State to refrain from personal attacks and mockery, emphasizing the necessity of unity ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election. The monarch specifically cautioned against disparaging remarks directed at House of Representatives member Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, who has declared his intention to contest the state’s governorship for the fourth time.

Isiaka, representing the Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC), announced his 2027 ambition recently. His past electoral defeats since 2011 have subjected him to criticism, with opponents labelling him a “serial contestant.” However, Oba Akinyemi argued that such ridicule is counterproductive, stating that Isiaka’s enduring political relevance demonstrates significant skill.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the traditional ruler highlighted Isiaka’s contributions to his constituency, citing the delivery of key infrastructure projects including roads, schools, hospitals, and security facilities. He contended that past electoral outcomes should not define a politician’s capability, drawing historical parallels. “Former President Muhammadu Buhari ran for the presidency three times before succeeding on the fourth attempt. Abraham Lincoln also experienced multiple defeats before becoming U.S. president,” Oba Akinyemi noted.

The monarch pointed to the 2019 Ogun State governorship election as a critical case study. Incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun of the APC won with 241,670 votes, defeating Adekunle Akinlade (APM, 222,153 votes) and Isiaka (ADC, 110,442 votes). Oba Akinyemi asserted that had Isiaka and Akinlade formed an alliance, the result could have differed. He also praised Isiaka for showing respect to national APC leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu during that cycle.

Oba Akinyemi called on President Bola Tinubu, Governor Abiodun, and other state leaders to foster reconciliation among political stakeholders. He stressed that new aspirants for the 2027 race will require support from established figures to mount a viable challenge. The monarch reiterated that all politicians who have persistently sought to lead Ogun State deserve recognition for their perseverance, not public humiliation. His appeal underscores a broader push for cohesive strategy within the state’s political class as the next election cycle approaches.
