Kano Pays N7.4m Compensation to Uromi Attack Victims

The Kano State government has disbursed N7.4 million in compensation to families of victims from the 2025 mob attack in Uromi, Edo State, fulfilling a pledge made by Governor Abba Yusuf during a visit to the affected communities. The payment, which included cash and food items, was delivered at the palace of the district head of Bunkure, Kano State.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, the Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, stated the support is intended to alleviate the hardship faced by families who lost members or sustained injuries in the incident. According to the commissioner, each of the 16 families of the deceased received N300,000, while 13 survivors were given N200,000 each. Additionally, two bags of rice were distributed to every beneficiary.

Waiya explained that Governor Yusuf initiated the payment after learning the earlier commitment had not been implemented. “We are here to redeem the pledge made by His Excellency when he visited and sympathised with the families,” he said. He characterised the event as a tragedy, noting that 16 people were killed and 13 others injured when a group attacked them on their journey back to the North after the Sallah celebrations. Most of the victims were hunters from Kano who were mistaken for kidnappers.

The commissioner also addressed ongoing efforts concerning compensation promised by the Edo State government. He confirmed that a dedicated account has been opened to facilitate those payments, expressing optimism that the funds would be released promptly. “We are hopeful the compensation will be released soon,” Waiya said, assuring the families that both governments remain committed to supporting them and pursuing justice. He urged patience, pledging continued governmental assistance.

The district head of Bunkure, Alhaji Aminu Umar, thanked the Kano State government for honouring its promise and prayed for enduring peace. The payment represents a concrete step in addressing the aftermath of the 2025 attack, though the anticipated compensation from Edo State authorities remains a pending element in the overall response.
