After completing mandatory military service in South Korea, BTS reunified for their first full-group U.S. performance in four years at the Spotify x BTS: Swimside event in New York City on Monday. The occasion marked the live debut of songs from their new album, “Arirang,” in the United States.
The members’ hiatus, which began in 2022, saw each pursue solo endeavors while the group maintained a digital presence through archived content. Monday’s invitation-only gathering at Pier 17 attracted fans who queued for hours in cold weather, with attendance limited to top local Spotify streamers. The venue offered scenic views of the East River, Brooklyn Bridge, and lower Manhattan.
The event commenced with a Q&A moderated by Suki Waterhouse. BTS members spoke about creating “Arirang” during a two-month cohabitation in Los Angeles. Jin described the lead single “Swim” as an anthem for moving forward through adversity. Light moments included RM joking about Jung Kook’s constant luggage and Jimin revealing his habit of being naked at home, which drew excited reactions.
Following a brief intermission where fans sang along to the new album, BTS performed “Swim,” “2.0,” and “Normal.” Despite RM’s sprained ankle limiting his movement, the group delivered a dynamic show. The audience responded with synchronized lightstick waves and chants. Notably, fans held signs reading “We Stayed!” to affirm their steadfast support, a detail observed by member V.
In closing, RM addressed the crowd, “It’s really an honor for us to do our first stage in America here. It’s been four years, but now weโre here.” This performance extends beyond a musical comeback; it symbolizes a restored physical connection between BTS and their global audience after prolonged separation. As they promote “Arirang,” this event sets a precedent for future engagements, emphasizing the value of live interaction in sustaining fan relationships.
