Punch the Monkey’s IKEA Plushie Wins Internet’s Heart

A baby macaque named Punch at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan has become an unexpected global sensation, drawing widespread empathy after images showed him clinging to a stuffed orangutan toy for comfort.

Punch, a Japanese macaque born in July 2025, was rejected by his mother shortly after birth. In the wild, such rejection is typically fatal. At the zoo, staff intervened with hand-rearing, providing a plush toy as a substitute for maternal contact. The infant has since been photographed and filmed sleeping with the toy, carrying it on his back, and pressing his face into it when distressed.

Videos and images of Punch, often referred to affectionately as “Punch-kun” online, have circulated widely on social media platforms including X and Instagram. The response has been substantial, with users sharing supportive messages and fan art. The specific stuffed toy, identified as an IKEA product, has seen increased public interest.

While Punch has garnered international affection, his social integration within the zoo’s macaque troop remains gradual. According to official updates from Ichikawa City Zoo, Punch is slowly being accepted by the other monkeys. A February 6 social media post stated he is “getting groomed, playfully poking at others, getting scolded, and having all sorts of experiences every day, steadily learning how to live as a monkey within the troop.”

His popularity has also driven visitor numbers, with hundreds travelling to Ichikawa City to see Punch and his toy, locally nicknamed “Oran Mama.” For ongoing updates, the zoo suggests following the hashtag #がんばれパンチ, which translates to “#HangInTherePunch.”

The story resonates beyond simple viral trends, touching on themes of resilience, surrogate care, and the universal need for comfort. Punch’s attachment to the inanimate object mirrors behaviours seen in human infants, creating a relatable narrative that transcends language and culture. His ongoing development within the troop will continue to be monitored by both zoo staff and the international public invested in his progress.
