A large-scale theft of Nestlé’s KitKat chocolate bars has occurred in Europe, with the company warning the incident could lead to store shortages in the run-up to Easter.
Nestlé confirmed that a truck transporting 413,793 units of the new KitKat range was stolen last week while in transit across Europe. The shipment, weighing approximately 12 tonnes, was en route from central Italy to Poland, with plans to distribute the product in several countries along the way. The exact location of the theft has not been disclosed, and both the vehicle and its contents remain missing.
In a statement, the KitKat brand noted the timing is particularly sensitive due to seasonal demand. “The theft may lead to a shortage of KitKats appearing on shelf,” the company stated, acknowledging that “consumers, unfortunately, may struggle to find their favourite chocolates ahead of Easter.”
Nestlé is working with local authorities and supply chain partners on an ongoing investigation. The company also warned that the stolen goods “could enter unofficial sales channels across European markets.” To combat this, KitKat highlighted its traceability system, noting each bar carries a unique batch code. “If a match is found, the scanner will be given clear instructions on how to alert KitKat who will then share the evidence appropriately,” the statement explained.
The incident underscores vulnerabilities in complex supply chains during peak retail periods. With Easter being a significant confectionery sales window in many European markets, the loss of an entire shipment of a major branded product is expected to disrupt availability in some regions. Nestlé has not quantified the potential scale of the shortage but is monitoring distribution networks closely. Consumers are advised to purchase KitKat products from authorised retailers to avoid illicit goods.
