Internet Data Usage in Nigeria Reaches 45000 TB Daily

Nigeria’s internet data consumption reached 1.26 million terabytes in February 2026, reflecting sustained growth in daily digital demand despite a calendar-driven decline in monthly totals. According to the latest industry report from the Nigerian Communications Commission, average daily usage climbed to approximately 45,000 terabytes, representing a 0.7 percent increase from the previous month.

Although aggregate monthly traffic fell by 125,475 terabytes from January’s 1.38 million terabytes, the dip primarily results from February’s shorter calendar duration. Telecom industry analyst Osita Odafi described this as a predictable seasonal adjustment. When adjusting for the number of days in each month, the underlying metric shows consistent daily growth rather than contraction.

The upward trend in daily data consumption signals deeper structural changes in how consumers utilize digital networks. Increased reliance on bandwidth-heavy services, including video streaming, financial technology applications, remote collaboration tools, and social media platforms, drives the demand. This pattern intensifies operational pressure on national broadband infrastructure while simultaneously expanding revenue potential for telecommunications providers.

Market data confirms major operators are capturing this growth. MTN Nigeria added over 1.1 million internet subscribers in February, raising its active user base to 82.1 million from 81 million in January. Airtel recorded a net gain of 507,596 subscribers, bringing its total to 54 million. Industry analysis indicates that while monthly customer churn can temporarily obscure net additions, consistent daily uptake remains a reliable indicator of market expansion.

As digital connectivity becomes increasingly embedded in commercial and household activities, network operators and regulators face ongoing requirements to scale capacity. Industry observers emphasize that sustained investment in fiber deployment, mobile network upgrades, and cost-effective data plans will be necessary to maintain service reliability and accommodate projected traffic increases throughout the year.
