Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has stated he has not endorsed any candidate for the 2027 Rivers State governorship or other political offices, emphasizing that candidate selection will be determined by the state’s elders council. Speaking to stakeholders from both the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party at his Abuja residence on Monday, Wike clarified that the Elders Council, chaired by Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, holds the authority to make such decisions.
Rivers State, a major Nigerian political hub and oil-producing region, has experienced recurrent leadership disputes and electoral litigation over the past decade. Against this backdrop, the minister stressed that political imposition will not be tolerated in future elections. He noted that local voters have consistently resisted top-down candidate selection and warned that previous governance mistakes must not be repeated. Wike also acknowledged the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, recognizing its legislative role in shaping current political developments. He urged participants in the emerging cross-party coalition to prioritize collective state interests over personal ambition, adding that their current influence derives from unity rather than financial capacity.
While declining involvement in state-level endorsements, the FCT minister reaffirmed his alignment with the federal administration. “My only commitment for now is to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said, dismissing circulating speculation about secret backing for specific gubernatorial hopefuls. Wike indicated that the coalition’s growing coordination has attracted external interference aimed at creating internal divisions. He criticized several politically appointed officials who have publicly challenged the group’s leadership, describing such actions as a breach of expected political conduct.
The minister praised local government chairmen, community leaders, and party representatives for maintaining an inclusive dialogue process. The lack of formal grievances following the meeting suggests that current consultation frameworks are operating effectively. As preparations for the 2027 general elections advance, political actors in Rivers State are expected to continue structured engagements through established party channels. The elders council will begin formal deliberations in the coming months to assess suitable candidates for state and federal positions, establishing a unified platform for the next electoral cycle.
