Labaran Maku Resigns From PDP Citing Internal Party Crisis

Former Minister of Information Labaran Maku has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing prolonged internal crises and shifting political dynamics within his constituency support base.

The resignation, detailed in a formal letter dated March 11, 2026, was addressed to the PDP ward chairman in Wakama Ward, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Maku confirmed that the decision takes immediate effect, concluding a long-standing association with the national party.

In the correspondence, Maku, widely recognized by his traditional honorific ‘Mutumin Kirki’, explained that the departure follows extensive consultations with family members, political allies, traditional rulers, and grassroots supporters. He indicated that the collective direction favored by his political network aligns with emerging platforms outside the PDP. The former minister also referenced persistent organizational challenges within the party structure as a defining factor in his withdrawal.

Maku’s political trajectory in Nasarawa State spans more than two decades. Between 1999 and 2007, he served as a state commissioner and later as deputy governor. He subsequently transitioned to federal service, holding roles within the information sector during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, where he managed government communication strategies and public policy outreach.

His resignation occurs during a period of structural reassessment within the PDP, as regional directorates review electoral coordination and membership alignment. Despite his formal exit, Maku expressed appreciation for the institutional support and leadership experience provided by the party throughout his career. He reaffirmed his ongoing commitment to civic engagement and stated that future initiatives will remain centered on community development and national policy participation in Nasarawa State.

The PDP national secretariat has not yet issued a public statement regarding the resignation. The development highlights ongoing personnel adjustments within regional political networks, with potential implications for local coalition formations and electoral planning in the Middle Belt region.
