PDP Defection: Bauchi Gov Hints ADC Move By Thursday

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has signaled a potential defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing unresolved internal conflicts within his current political platform.

The chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum disclosed the development during a meeting at the Bauchi State Government House with an ADC delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal. Following closed-door discussions, Governor Mohammed told reporters that sustained efforts to reconcile fractured factions within the PDP have yielded no results. Reconciliation committees at both state and national levels explored multiple interventions, including diplomatic outreach to members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but these attempts proved unsuccessful.

With internal party dialogue stalled, Mohammed indicated that preliminary consultations with several opposition groups remain active. Among the alternatives discussed, the ADC has emerged as the most structured and welcoming platform. The governor emphasized that his team is carefully reviewing legal and administrative requirements to ensure a compliant transition. He stated that a final decision will be formalized by Thursday, with an official announcement to follow once stakeholder consultations conclude.

Addressing the drivers of the PDP’s current instability, Mohammed pointed to external interference, specifically alleging that Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has exacerbated factional divisions. He further noted that he previously engaged APC officials and President Bola Tinubu to mediate the dispute, though those discussions have not produced a resolution. As chairman of the governors’ forum, his potential movement carries implications for opposition coordination and resource mobilization across states.

The upcoming declaration will determine the immediate future of the PDP’s leadership structure in Bauchi State and signal broader shifts within Nigeria’s opposition landscape. Party officials and electoral authorities are awaiting formal documentation to process the governor’s political realignment before statutory filing deadlines.
