Wike Denies Endorsement of Rivers Governorship Candidate

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has publicly denied claims that he endorsed a candidate for the Rivers State governorship election, clarifying that nomination decisions fall outside his authority.

Speaking at a gathering of All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party stakeholders at his Life Camp residence in Abuja, Wike confirmed that candidate selection is managed by established party structures. “I have not endorsed any candidate for gubernatorial seat in Rivers State. Such a decision is the sole responsibility of the Elders Council led by Chief Ferdinand Alabraba,” he stated, reinforcing that official party protocols dictate vetting and approvals.

The former Rivers governor reaffirmed that his immediate political focus remains supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He cautioned prospective office seekers against seeking premature endorsements, emphasizing that no sitting federal or state official possesses the authority to impose a candidate on voters or party organs. Wike also referenced previous electoral cycles, noting that fragmented party strategies and rushed nominations had weakened organizational capacity in past elections.

He urged political actors to prioritize internal unity over financial influence, stressing that coordinated planning remains essential for competitive campaigns. The meeting drew representatives from multiple constituencies, reflecting ongoing efforts to streamline strategy ahead of state and federal electoral deadlines.

The Elders Council will oversee the formal nomination process, with party committees aligning internal schedules with electoral commission regulations. Stakeholders are expected to continue internal consultations as candidate assessments and regional coordination efforts progress. Maintaining structured party procedures and adhering to established guidelines will shape the political landscape as Rivers State moves toward its next electoral cycle.
