The Ebonyi State Police Command reported that a gun battle between its officers and assailants in Ivo Local Government Area resulted in one hoodlum being killed and another wounded. An Assistant Superintendent of Police was also injured during the clash.
According to State Police Public Relations Officer SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, the incident occurred on 7 March 2023 at about 23:45 hrs. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ivo Divisional Headquarters received a distress call indicating that unknown gunmen were firing sporadically and had set fire to two vehicles and a filling station. Responding promptly, the DPO proceeded to the scene, where he learned that the gunmen were seated in a public place in Ogwor community, Ishiagu.
En route, the police were ambushed; an Assistant Superintendent of Police was shot, but the patrol team engaged the hoodlums with superior firepower. During the ensuing gun duel, one hoodlum was neutralised and the others fled with bullet wounds. The DPO immediately requested reinforcements from headquarters.
Commissioner of Police CP Faleye Sunday Olaleye intercepted the distress call and ordered tactical teams to intercept the suspects, providing a description of the vehicle and the escape route. When the police arrived at Osso Junction, the hoodlums opened fire, leading to a further gunfight in which two more hoodlums were neutralised and two were arrested.
Items recovered at the crime scene included two AK‑47 rifles, a locally made pistol, various charms, a red Toyota Corolla, a fire‑man generator, a Haier Thermocool fridge, a walkie‑talkie radio set, 30 live AK‑47 rounds, 20 expended AK‑47 cartridges, an AK‑47 magazine, an Itel phone, an Android phone, a police trouser, a police beret, a police cap, and other incriminating objects.
