Peter Obi Joins Democracy Protest with Key Politicians

Prominent Nigerian politicians took to the streets of Abuja on Wednesday night to protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its recognition of a faction within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President David Mark.

Among those seen holding ADC placards during the “Save Our Democracy” protest were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, ex-governors Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Aminu Tambuwal.

Obi, in a statement on social media, described the protest as a peaceful effort to protect Nigeria’s democracy and a moment of reflection on the country’s democratic decline. He criticized what he called attempts by some in power to undermine opposition voices and suppress the will of the people.

The protest follows INEC’s decision to recognize the Mark-led faction of the ADC, a move contested by other party members. The commission’s stance has sparked internal party disputes and raised questions about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.

Political analysts say the protest underscores growing tensions between opposition figures and electoral authorities, with implications for Nigeria’s democratic stability ahead of future elections.
