Troops of the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Calabar, deployed for Operation Akpakwu, have rescued the Cross River Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Gertrude Njar, from captivity. The rescue was announced in a statement by Capt. Dorcas Aluko, Army Public Relations Officer for the 13 Brigade, on Wednesday.
Mrs. Njar was kidnapped on 1 February in the Mayne Avenue area of Calabar South. Acting on actionable intelligence about her whereabouts, troops set a covert ambush for the kidnappers near Peter Effiong Creek, Messembe, Jebs. The forces tactically sprung the ambush, surprising the abductors as they searched for the victim. In the ensuing melee, the criminals abandoned Mrs. Njar and fled into the creeks, while the troops continued to pursue them.
The commissioner is currently receiving medical treatment and will be discharged once she has recovered. The commander of the 13 Brigade commended the troops for their gallantry and urged them to maintain the tempo against all criminal elements within the brigade’s area of responsibility. He also encouraged the public to continue providing timely and accurate information on criminal activities in their communities.
