INEC Chairman Joash Amupatan Owns Controversial X Account Grok Confirms

An artificial intelligence assistant has confirmed that the X account in question belongs to the Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupatan, fueling allegations of his involvement in partisan politics.

The controversy erupted after social media users claimed that Amupatan operated a personal X account and had used it to endorse or interact with partisan content. The account, identified by the ID: 1567086242164101120, was reportedly created in September 2022, months before Amupatan was appointed as INEC Chairman.

Despite the electoral commission’s denial that Amupatan operates a personal X account, netizens have continued to unearth old posts from the account. For clarification, Bashir Ahmad, a former presidential media aide, sought verification from Grok, an AI assistant developed by xAI.

Ahmad asked Grok to confirm the original name of the account and its creation date. Grok responded that the account was created on September 6, 2022, under the username “joashamupitan” and that this username remained until April 10, 2026, when it was changed to “Sundayvibe00.”

The revelation has sparked reactions on social media, with some users calling for the Nigerian Senate to summon Amupatan to appear before it. Others have speculated about the motives behind the inquiry, suggesting that it may be driven by religious or political considerations.

The controversy has raised questions about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and the potential for partisan influence within the country’s electoral commission. As the story continues to unfold, it remains to be seen what actions, if any, will be taken in response to these allegations.
