Nigeria Engages US, UK, Türkiye to Tackle Security Challenges – Envoy

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has announced that President Bola Tinubu is engaging multiple international partners, including the United Kingdom, United States, and Türkiye, to address the country’s security challenges. Speaking shortly after his arrival in New York to assume his new role, Ambassador Ibrahim expressed confidence that the Nigerian government is pursuing a broad-based diplomatic approach to tackle threats such as Boko Haram.

“Nigeria is our country. We can have problems like Boko Haram, but we are embarking on multilateral engagements to solve them,” he said. “We are not looking for one single country to come and help us. We are looking for many countries to come and help us.” He added that while the United States is already involved, President Tinubu has also been in discussions with leaders in Türkiye and Britain, all of whom have indicated willingness to assist.

The envoy emphasized that every nation faces security challenges at some point, citing the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States as an example. He noted that Tinubu had appointed him to rally global support for Nigeria’s stability and development at the United Nations.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s unity, Ambassador Ibrahim stressed that the country must remain “one indivisible sovereign nation.” He described Nigeria as a unique country that the world can reference, underscoring that any talk of division is “unheard of, un-doable, un-achievable.”

The ambassador also highlighted the importance of advancing President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” through Nigeria’s foreign policy, calling for innovation and clarity in diplomatic engagements. “The president is very serious and is working hard to make sure our foreign policy is re-engineered to reflect the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said, adding that his mission includes clearly communicating this agenda to both multilateral partners and bilateral offices worldwide.

Ambassador Ibrahim was welcomed at JFK Airport by officials from Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the UN and the Consulate General in New York. His remarks signal Nigeria’s intent to deepen international cooperation while maintaining national cohesion amid ongoing security concerns.
