Ghanaian Player Dominic Frimpong Killed in Armed Robbery Attack on Berekum Chelsea Bus

Ghanaian Premier League club Berekum Chelsea has confirmed that one of its players, 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong, was killed during an armed attack on the team’s bus on Sunday. The incident occurred as the team was returning from an away match against Samartex in Samreboi, located in southern Ghana.

According to a statement from the club, the bus was ambushed by a group of masked men wielding guns and assault rifles. As the driver attempted to reverse the vehicle, the attackers opened fire. Players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover. One player was badly injured and is currently receiving medical attention at a local hospital.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) later confirmed Frimpong’s death, describing it as a tragic loss not only for Berekum Chelsea but for Ghanaian football as a whole. “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the GFA said in its statement.

The association has pledged to strengthen security measures for clubs traveling to domestic matches in response to the incident. This attack follows a similar event in 2023, when the bus of another Ghanaian Premier League team, Legon Cities, was targeted by suspected armed robbers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that earlier incident.

The killing has raised renewed concerns over the safety of football teams traveling across Ghana, particularly in areas with reported security challenges. Authorities have yet to release details on arrests or ongoing investigations into Sunday’s attack.
