YouTube has introduced a new feature designed to enhance the live streaming experience by temporarily pausing advertisements during moments of peak viewer engagement. The Google-owned platform announced that when chat activity surges—indicating high audience interaction—its system will automatically hold back ads for all viewers to preserve the momentum and energy of the stream.
This change marks a shift from YouTube’s previous approach, where the only way to avoid ads entirely was through a paid YouTube Premium subscription. Now, creators can maintain uninterrupted engagement during key moments without relying solely on premium memberships.
In addition to the ad-hold feature, YouTube is rewarding direct fan support with immediate benefits. Viewers who purchase Super Chats, Super Stickers, or send gifts will receive a personal ad-free viewing window right after their transaction. Super Chats allow users to pay to highlight their messages in chat, while Super Stickers are purchasable images that make messages stand out visually.
The updates were unveiled alongside several other enhancements for live creators. YouTube has expanded its gifting feature to more countries, including Canada, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand. Viewers can now send GIFs during horizontal livestreams—previously limited to vertical formats—directly from mobile devices. Creators also gain the ability to broadcast simultaneously in both vertical and horizontal formats, with all viewers participating in a single shared chat. This flexibility caters to the growing number of users watching live content on connected TVs, which accounted for over 30% of live watch time in the U.S. in 2025.
These developments come shortly after YouTube increased subscription prices in the U.S., raising the individual YouTube Premium plan from $13.99 to $15.99 per month and the family plan from $22.99 to $26.99 per month.
By balancing ad revenue with user experience and creator support, YouTube aims to foster more dynamic and rewarding live interactions across its platform.
