I did not authorize it - El-Rufai debunks reports on political ambition

Former Kaduna State Governor and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly distanced himself from remarks made by a political associate concerning his potential presidential ambitions for the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued by his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai clarified that these comments were not authorized by him and should not be interpreted as reflective of his political intentions. The statement emphasized his long-standing practice of directly expressing his views without relying on intermediaries.

“Throughout his public life, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has been known for the frank articulation of his views. He is not about to outsource the expression of his political views and thoughts to others,” the statement read. El-Rufai, who served as the governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, often recognized for his outspoken positions on national issues. His tenure was marked by significant reforms and controversies, particularly regarding policies on religious preaching, education, and security.

The disclaimer comes amid growing speculation about potential candidates for the 2027 presidential race, with El-Rufai frequently mentioned as a possible contender. However, he has consistently adopted a cautious approach to public declarations regarding his political future. El-Rufai’s media team reiterated that any official communication from him would be issued directly by the former governor or through his authorized spokesperson. This measure aims to prevent misrepresentation and ensure clarity in his political messaging.

As Nigeria approaches the next electoral cycle, political figures like El-Rufai are under increased scrutiny, with their statements and affiliations closely monitored by both supporters and critics. The former governor’s clarification serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate reporting and the necessity for public figures to control their narratives in a dynamic political landscape.
