Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that opposition political parties are sponsoring insecurity in Nigeria, asserting that the situation will improve after the 2027 general election. He made these remarks during the official launch of the Nigerian Revenue Service Corporate Headquarters in Abuja. According to Akpabio, the current administration under President Bola Tinubu is performing well, but political opponents are resorting to acts of violence to undermine the government. He stated, “Insecurity is increasing because an election is coming, because people don’t know what to do again. Immediately after the election, two weeks after, the insecurity will stop. The insecurity is being sponsored by people.”
Additionally, the Senate President criticized the opposition, describing it as disorganized. He referenced a political figure who, in his view, abandoned millions of votes to join another platform. Akpabio urged Nigerians to remain patient with the current administration, insisting that it is on the right track. He also commended the Chairman of the Nigerian Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, noting that he is widely accepted by Nigerians despite the general perception of tax officials. “Even in the Bible, people don’t like tax collectors. Zacch has done very well and Nigerians are happy with him,” he added.
Akpabio’s comments come amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, which include banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes. The government has faced criticism regarding its handling of insecurity, with opposition parties accusing it of failing to protect citizens. The Senate President’s remarks are likely to ignite further debate about the political dimensions of Nigeria’s security crisis.
