Dexter Lawrence Trade Talks Reach Impasse Amid Contract Dispute

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen said on Tuesday that the team has had “good conversations” with the representatives for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, but those discussions have not been sufficient to reach an agreement. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the two sides have reached an “impasse,” and the Giants have begun exploring trade options with other teams. Rapoport added that trade talks will continue and that the situation “should come to a head” before the NFL draft, which begins in nine days.

Lawrence, who is under contract through 2027 and due to earn $20 million in 2026, is seeking a raise. The recent contract extension between the Philadelphia Eagles and defensive tackle Jordan Davis—boosting Davis’s new-money average annual value to $26 million—has been a significant factor in Lawrence’s negotiations.

If the Giants proceed with a trade, Lawrence’s new team would need to finalize a contract extension with him before the deal is completed. Otherwise, the acquiring team would inherit the same contractual uncertainty the Giants are currently facing.

The Giants’ defensive line has been a cornerstone of their defense, and Lawrence’s potential departure would mark a significant shift in their roster strategy heading into the 2025 season.
