Troops arrest two suspected ISWAP informants in Borno

Troops of Operation MESA recently conducted a raid on an illegal mining site in the Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State. The operation, which took place on April 13 at approximately 1:00 p.m. in the Taki area, resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of various weapons and items. This successful operation was made possible through the coordinated efforts of soldiers from the 12 Brigade and local vigilantes.

According to counter-insurgency and security expert Zagazola Makama, the suspects claimed to be gold dealers and members of the Miyetti Allah socio-cultural association. During the raid, the troops recovered a locally made pistol, four cartridges, two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two motorcycles, three mobile phones, two cutlasses, and ₦68,100 in cash. The suspects, along with the seized items, are currently in military custody, where they will undergo further investigation and necessary legal proceedings.

This operation is part of ongoing efforts by security forces to combat illegal mining and the associated criminal activities that plague the state. Illegal mining poses a significant challenge in Nigeria, often linked to violence, environmental degradation, and a loss of government revenue. In response, security agencies have intensified operations in affected regions to restore order and protect the nation’s natural resources. Authorities have also urged local communities to cooperate with security forces by reporting any suspicious activities, which is essential in curbing these illicit operations.
