OpenAI has expanded its Agents Software Development Kit (SDK) with new features designed to help businesses build autonomous AI agents that operate within controlled environments. One of the key updates is the introduction of sandboxing capabilities, which allow agents to function in isolated workspaces. In these environments, agents can access specific files and tools without compromising the integrity of the broader system. This enhancement addresses growing concerns regarding the unpredictable behavior of autonomous systems when deployed without oversight.

Additionally, the revised SDK includes an in-distribution harness for frontier models. This feature enables agents to interact with approved resources within a workspace while supporting the deployment and testing of advanced, general-purpose AI models. In the context of agent development, the term “harness” refers to the supporting infrastructure that goes beyond the model itself. Its inclusion in the SDK facilitates more secure and flexible integration with existing enterprise systems.

Karan Sharma, a member of OpenAI’s product team, noted that the update enhances the compatibility of the Agents SDK with a variety of sandbox providers. This allows users to construct long-horizon agents—complex, multi-step processes—using their preferred infrastructure. As a result, the potential applications for enterprises looking to automate sophisticated workflows have significantly broadened.

The new capabilities are initially available in Python, with TypeScript support planned for the future. All customers can access these features via the API under standard pricing. OpenAI has also indicated plans for further enhancements, including expanded support for features such as code mode and subagents across both programming languages. This strategic move positions OpenAI competitively in a rapidly evolving market, where competitors like Anthropic are also advancing their agent-building tools. By prioritizing security, flexibility, and compatibility, OpenAI aims to make autonomous agents more viable for enterprise adoption while mitigating the risks associated with unsupervised AI operations.
