DeepL, known for text translation, now wants to translate your voice

Translation technology company DeepL has introduced a suite of real-time voice-to-voice translation tools designed to enhance multilingual communication in business and frontline environments. Known for its high-quality text translation services, DeepL is now expanding into live speech translation with products tailored for meetings, mobile and web conversations, and group interactions among field workers. This new offering includes integrations with platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, allowing participants to hear real-time translations while others speak in their native languages or to view translated text on screen.

An early-access program is currently available for organizations interested in testing the system. Additionally, DeepL has launched a standalone solution for mobile and web-based conversations, along with a group conversation tool that enables participants to join via QR code. This feature is particularly useful in training sessions, workshops, and other collaborative settings. A key aspect of the system is its ability to learn and adapt to custom vocabulary, including industry-specific terminology, company names, and personal names, which enhances accuracy in specialized contexts.

DeepL asserts that it controls the entire voice-to-voice technology stack, although the current process involves converting speech to text, translating it, and then converting it back to speech. The company aims to eventually develop a fully end-to-end voice translation model that eliminates the text step entirely. CEO Jarek Kutylowski emphasized that while text translation has been a core strength, real-time voice translation presents new technical challenges, particularly in balancing low latency with high accuracy. He also pointed out the potential for AI-powered translation to transform customer service, enabling companies to assist customers in languages where qualified staff are scarce or expensive to hire.

DeepL enters a competitive landscape that includes startups such as Sanas, which modifies accents in real time for call centers; Camb.AI, which focuses on speech synthesis and media localization; and Palabra, which aims to preserve both meaning and speaker voice in real-time translation. With its established reputation in text translation and an expanding suite of voice tools, DeepL is positioning itself as a significant player in the evolving field of live multilingual communication.
