A faction of the Labour Party led by the Nenadi Usman Caretaker Committee has announced the suspension of 26 members loyal to the Julius Abure-led faction. The Nenadi-led faction, which is recognized by the Supreme Court, posted the names of the suspended party members on its X (formerly Twitter) handle. According to the post, the National Executive Council of the faction approved the suspensions.
This development follows a Supreme Court ruling on April 4, 2025, which removed Julius Abure as the national chairperson of the party. The court’s decision has deepened internal divisions within the Labour Party, with rival factions vying for control.
The suspended members include prominent party figures such as Eneyi G. Zidougha, Hilda Doukubo, Lincolin Charles, Muhammed Sabitu Aliyu, Ogar Osim, Vincent Okwuokei, Casmir Agbo Uchenna, Simon Zubairu Bamga, Abduljamid Sa’ad Suleiman, Emmanuel Agida, Auwala Ahmed, Ularama Jubrila, Grace Zafara Posat, Suleiman Abdurahman Abdul, Ajibade Adekunle Samson, Alexander Emmanuel Ombugu, Elizabeth Ativie, Godwin Jioke, Airen Igbinedion, Osas Frank, Kennedy Ahanotu, Dr. Ayo Olurunfemi, Abayomi Arabambi, Umar Faruk Ibrahim, Auwal Tafoki, and Obiora Ifoh.
The suspensions highlight the ongoing power struggle within the Labour Party, which has been marked by legal battles and factional disputes. The Nenadi Usman-led faction’s actions underscore its efforts to consolidate control following the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Political analysts suggest that the suspensions could further polarize the party, potentially affecting its cohesion and electoral prospects. The Labour Party, which gained significant traction in recent elections, now faces the challenge of resolving its internal conflicts to maintain its position as a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape.
As the situation unfolds, observers will be watching closely to see how the suspended members respond and whether the party can navigate its internal divisions to present a united front in future political engagements.
