Omawumi Says Love Has Always Been Transactional, Now More Expensive

Popular Nigerian singer Omawumi has weighed in on the ongoing debate about the transactional nature of modern relationships, arguing that such dynamics have always existed but have intensified in recent years.

In a recent interview with Pulse, the ‘Bottom Belle’ crooner explained that love has always involved an element of exchange, but she acknowledged that expectations have become more demanding than in previous generations.

Omawumi reflected on how the cost of impressing a romantic interest has escalated over time. “Love has always been transactional. Women have always been demanding since the beginning of time,” she said. “But during my youth, our transaction was different because you could impress your crush with just ice cream and popcorn. But now, it is iPhone.”

The music star also pointed out that societal narratives sometimes overemphasise the transactional aspects of relationships while overlooking women’s contributions and reciprocation. She suggested that some men who complain about these dynamics may be choosing partners whose expectations exceed their own means.

Her comments come amid broader discussions about changing relationship norms in Nigeria and across Africa, where economic pressures and shifting social expectations have influenced how people approach romance. Omawumi’s perspective adds nuance to the debate, highlighting both the historical continuity and the evolving nature of romantic exchanges in contemporary society.
