INEC Adjusts Osun Governorship Election to August 15, 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has adjusted the campaign timeline for the upcoming Osun State governorship election. The change, announced on Thursday by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, moves the election date forward by one week, from August 8, 2026, to August 15, 2026.

The revised schedule aligns with Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which stipulates that political campaigns must conclude 24 hours before election day. Consequently, the final day for political parties to campaign in Osun State is now set for midnight on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

INEC has called on all political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to comply strictly with the updated timeline. The commission reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, emphasizing the importance of adherence to the revised schedule to ensure a smooth electoral process.

The adjustment comes as part of broader preparations for the 2027 general election, for which INEC has also issued a revised timetable and schedule of activities. The move is intended to provide clarity and order as political activities intensify in the lead-up to the governorship poll.

With the new dates in place, attention now turns to how political parties will adapt their campaign strategies within the shortened timeframe. INEC has urged all involved to maintain focus on the electoral process’s integrity and transparency.

The commission’s announcement underscores its role in managing electoral timelines and ensuring compliance with legal frameworks governing Nigeria’s democratic processes. As the election approaches, stakeholders will be closely monitoring developments to ensure a peaceful and orderly exercise of civic duty in Osun State.
