Starbucks AI chatbot beta app on ChatGPT lets users choose drinks by mood

Starbucks has launched a beta application within ChatGPT, enabling users to have an AI chatbot recommend beverages based on mood, preferences, or even uploaded photos. The feature, introduced this week, allows ChatGPT users to initiate the experience by typing “@Starbucks” followed by a prompt describing their desired drink characteristics—such as “something bright to start my morning” or “an afternoon boost that isn’t too sweet.” Users can also specify dietary preferences like non-dairy or low-caffeine options, or upload an image to convey their “vibe,” with the AI selecting a matching Starbucks beverage.

Once a drink is chosen and a store location selected, customers are redirected to the Starbucks app or website to complete payment and order fulfillment. The coffee giant describes the tool as a way to help customers discover new drinks they might enjoy, framing it as “using AI to support something very human.”

The move reflects Starbucks’ broader strategy of integrating artificial intelligence into customer engagement, following similar initiatives in personalization and mobile ordering. By embedding the service within ChatGPT, the company aims to reach users in a conversational, accessible format while encouraging trial of new menu items.

This development comes amid growing competition in the quick-service and coffee sectors, where digital innovation and convenience increasingly influence consumer behavior. Starbucks’ adoption of AI-driven recommendations could set a precedent for how other brands leverage chatbot technology to enhance in-store and mobile experiences.

While the beta is currently limited to ChatGPT users, its success may lead to broader rollout or integration with other AI platforms. The initiative underscores the evolving role of AI in retail, blending data-driven personalization with everyday consumer choices.
