Labour Party Suspends Key Members Amid Leadership Crisis

The Labour Party (LP) has suspended 26 senior members, including former state and national leaders, following a Supreme Court ruling that removed former national chairman Julius Abure and affirmed the leadership of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee.

Among those suspended are Emmanuel Agida, former chairman of the Benue State chapter; Hilda Doukubo and Eneyi G. Zidougha, former chairmen of Rivers and Bayelsa states, respectively; Dr. Ayo Olurunfemi, ex-national deputy chairman; and Muhammed Sabitu Aliyu, former Bauchi State chairman. Also affected are several former national and state officials aligned with Abure.

The suspensions were announced by the Usman-led Caretaker Committee on its official X account, citing approval from the party’s National Executive Council. The committee is the only leadership structure recognized by the Supreme Court, which in a unanimous judgment on April 4, 2025, sacked Abure and nullified a prior Court of Appeal ruling that had upheld his position.

In January 2026, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja reinforced the Supreme Court’s decision, formally recognizing Senator Nenadi Usman as the party’s legitimate national chairman. The court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cease recognizing Abure and to acknowledge the Usman-led caretaker committee as the lawful authority until the party’s national convention.

Other suspended members include Hon. Lincolin Charles, Ogar Osim, Vincent Okwuokei, Casmir Agbo Uchenna, Simon Zubairu Bamga, Abduljamid Sa’ad Suleiman, Auwala Ahmed, Ularama Jubrila, Grace Zafara Posat, Suleiman Abdurahman Abdul, Ajibade Adekunle Samson, Alexander Emmanuel Ombugu, Elizabeth Ativie, Godwin Jioke, Airen Igbinedion, Osas Frank, Kennedy Ahanotu, Abayomi Arabambi, Umar Faruk Ibrahim, Auwal Tafoki, and Obiora Ifoh.

The Labour Party has scheduled its national convention for Saturday, April 28, 2026, to elect new national leadership and move past the prolonged internal crisis.
