Kano APC backs Garo for deputy governor

A new legal challenge has arisen in Kano State regarding the proposed screening of Murtala Garo for the position of Deputy Governor. Lawyers are seeking to prevent the State House of Assembly from proceeding with this process. In a letter dated April 15, 2026, addressed to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibrin Falgore, the law firm Suleiman Mohammed & Co. confirmed that it had filed a lawsuit on behalf of Kuliyya Muhammad Salihu and two others. This legal action, marked K/360/2026, is currently before the Kano State High Court and specifically challenges the planned screening of Garo.

The lawyers emphasized that the matter is sub judice, indicating that it is under judicial consideration and should not be interfered with. They urged the Assembly to suspend all actions related to the screening process, warning that any steps taken while the case is pending could compromise the integrity of the judicial process. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Clerk of the Assembly, and lawmakers have acknowledged its receipt.

This development occurs amid rising political tensions in Kano surrounding the deputy governorship position, with various groups reportedly holding meetings and engaging in lobbying efforts. The new legal intervention has intensified the political crisis in the state, raising concerns about the timeline and legitimacy of the appointment process. Political analysts suggest that the outcome of this case could have significant implications for governance in Kano, particularly if the court rules in favor of the plaintiffs. The State House of Assembly has not yet issued an official response to the legal challenge, but the situation is being closely monitored by political stakeholders nationwide.
