Shekarau Resigns from PDP, Eyes New Political Party

Kano State – In a formal move that signals a major shift in Kano State’s political landscape, former Kano State Governor and Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The resignation, dated April 19, 2026, was addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area, and takes immediate effect.

In his resignation letter, Shekarau stated that the decision followed “wide and extensive deliberations within my political group” and was driven by a desire to pursue his political career in a different party. While he did not name the new party, sources close to the former minister suggest he is preparing to join the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which has been gaining traction in Kano politics.

Shekarau, who previously served as Minister of Education under the All Progressives Congress (APC), had defected to the PDP in 2022 in a high-profile move. His return to another party is seen as part of ongoing realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The letter was also copied to the Kano State PDP Chairman and the Nassarawa Local Government Area PDP Chairman, ensuring formal notification across party structures. In a gesture of goodwill, Shekarau thanked the ward chairman for his leadership and offered prayers for continued guidance.

Political analysts note that Shekarau’s move could have significant implications for the PDP’s strength in Kano, a state with a large voting population and a history of fluid political allegiances. His return to the NNPP, where he previously held influence, may bolster the party’s bid to consolidate power in the region.

As political parties intensify preparations for upcoming elections, Shekarau’s defection underscores the strategic maneuvering that often precedes major electoral contests in Nigeria.
