EPL: Two Man City players' departure confirmed

Manchester City defender John Stones is set to leave the club on a free transfer this summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The 31‑year‑old centre‑back has been with the Premier League champions since 2016 and has played a key role in their recent successes. Stones’ departure follows the earlier confirmation from club captain Bernardo Silva that he will also exit the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season after nine years of service. Romano wrote on social media: “John Stones, expected to leave Manchester City in the summer as free agent. 31‑year‑old defender wants to help until the end of the season and then expected to go after making history at #MCFC. Bernardo and Stones, both leaving in June.”

During his time at Manchester City, Stones was an integral part of a squad that dominated English football, helping the team secure multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups and a historic Champions League trophy. His versatility saw him deployed across the backline and even in midfield under former manager Pep Guardiola. The departures of both Stones and Silva mark the end of an era for Manchester City, with two key figures from their most successful period moving on. Their exits will require significant rebuilding during the summer transfer window as the club aims to maintain its competitive edge both domestically and in Europe.

Stones’ contract situation has been a topic of discussion for some time, with negotiations over an extension proving difficult. By leaving as a free agent, he can negotiate with interested clubs immediately, potentially opening up a new challenge in the latter stages of his career. As the season enters its final stretch, Manchester City will rely on Stones to maintain his form and contribute to any remaining objectives, while planning for a future without one of their most dependable defenders.
