Nigeria Police Force Restructures Monitoring Unit to Boost Accountability and Efficiency
In a significant move to enhance internal oversight and operational effectiveness, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit. The reform, announced on Monday, is part of the Force’s broader efforts to strengthen discipline, accountability, and service delivery across its formations.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the restructuring aims to refocus the unit on its core mandate, address operational inefficiencies, and improve its capacity for real-time monitoring and intelligence-led inspections. The overhaul is intended to position the unit as a more effective internal oversight mechanism capable of identifying misconduct and enforcing professional standards.
Under the new framework, the Monitoring Unit has been streamlined and reinforced to provide nationwide oversight of police personnel and operations across commands, formations, and departments. The reorganisation also harmonises investigative and monitoring functions to align with the Force’s reform agenda.
As part of the changes, the IGP has appointed Aliyu Abubakar as the new head of the Police Monitoring Team. Abubakar, a seasoned officer with extensive experience in criminal investigations, previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State. He has been involved in high-profile investigations and is recognised for his commitment to transparency, professionalism, and community-oriented policing.
The Inspector-General emphasised that the restructuring is a step towards entrenching discipline, transparency, and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force. He noted that the Monitoring Unit will play a central role in ensuring accountability at all levels and in identifying operational lapses.
The Force reiterated its commitment to sustained institutional reforms aimed at delivering a more accountable, professional, and citizen-focused policing system.
