NNPP Threatens INEC with Contempt Action Over Court Order Defiance

The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warning of potential contempt proceedings if the electoral body fails to comply with a recent court order. In a statement signed by National Secretary Mr. Ogini Olaposi, the party accused INEC of persistent disobedience to judicial directives, a stance it warned could disrupt the 2027 general elections timetable.

The NNPP’s ultimatum follows a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory ruling that directed INEC to update its records, recognise the Dr. Agbo Major-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, and file an affidavit of compliance within 72 hours. According to Olaposi, three weeks have elapsed since the judgment was delivered by Justice Bello Kawu and served by court bailiffs, yet INEC has yet to comply without offering any credible explanation.

Olaposi stressed that INEC’s inaction risks undermining the party’s ability to prepare for and participate in the 2027 elections on equal footing with other political parties. He described the commission’s conduct as avoidable and disturbing, especially given that it is led by a Professor of Law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

The NNPP has called on the federal government and key stakeholders—including the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association—to intervene and ensure INEC adheres to the court’s directive. The party warned that continued non-compliance could threaten Nigeria’s democratic process and distort the election timetable.

Furthermore, the NNPP urged a comprehensive overhaul of INEC’s legal department to restore credibility and safeguard the integrity of the nation’s electoral system. Olaposi noted that the commission’s current conduct appears to contradict the spirit and letter of the Renewed Hope Agenda championed by President Bola Tinubu.

The NNPP’s stance adds to growing concerns over INEC’s adherence to judicial rulings, with the party joining other stakeholders in calling for accountability and respect for the rule of law within Nigeria’s electoral framework.
