Cole Palmer could join Manchester United if Chelsea miss Champions League, says Paul Merson

Chelsea’s hopes of securing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League are in serious jeopardy after a 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Tuesday left them seventh in the Premier League table. With only four matches remaining, the Blues must win all their remaining fixtures and rely on favourable results elsewhere to finish in the top five.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has warned that failure to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition could trigger the departure of one of Chelsea’s most influential players. Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson suggested that Cole Palmer’s future at Stamford Bridge could be in doubt if the club misses out on Champions League football.

“No Champions League football will be a kick in the teeth for Chelsea,” Merson said. “Do you think Cole Palmer will be at Chelsea playing in the Europa Conference League? I don’t think so.”

Merson went further, speculating that Manchester United could emerge as a potential destination for the 22-year-old England international. “Manchester United will get into the Champions League, and I would not be surprised if he was playing there next season.”

Palmer, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in a £42.5 million deal in 2023, has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season, contributing 22 goals and 11 assists across all competitions. His form has made him a key figure in Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but questions are now being raised about whether Chelsea can retain him without the financial and competitive benefits of Champions League football.

The club’s immediate priority will be securing a top-five finish to guarantee European football next season. However, with rivals such as Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Aston Villa also vying for Champions League qualification, Chelsea’s path remains narrow.

As the season enters its final stages, the pressure on the squad and coaching staff will intensify. For Palmer, the coming weeks could prove decisive—not just for Chelsea’s European ambitions, but for his own future at the club.
