Russia Ready to Assist Libya in National Reconciliation and Economic Cooperation

Russia has expressed its readiness to support Libya in “restoring unity and national reconciliation,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday following talks with Libya’s acting foreign minister, Taher Al-Baour, in Moscow.

Al-Baour stated that the Libyan delegation intends to meet with Russian government officials to advance the resumption of bilateral agreements. “We anticipate that we will have the opportunity to engage with representatives of various government institutions of the Russian Federation, work toward the resumption of specific contracts and agreements, and potentially conclude new arrangements,” he said.

The two sides agreed to restart the work of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation. Lavrov said, “We will seek out opportunities to assist our companies in returning to or re-entering the Libyan economy through the mechanism of the Intergovernmental Commission.” The Libyan trade minister was also present at the discussions.

The meeting underscores Moscow’s ongoing diplomatic engagement in Libya, where rival administrations have struggled to unify the country following years of conflict. Russia’s involvement reflects its broader strategy to expand influence in North Africa and support partners in stabilizing volatile regions.

In a separate development, Lavrov commented on US-Iran negotiations, saying that if both sides reach an agreement similar to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, “that would constitute a major success.”

The talks between Russia and Libya come amid international efforts to support Libya’s political transition and economic recovery, with Moscow positioning itself as a key partner in these processes.
